Frequently Asked Questions about Fire Shutters

What is a window fire shutter?

Fire shutters, also known as fire-rated shutters, are a type of heavy-duty roller shutter that is designed to provide protection against the spread of fire. They are designed to operate on receiving a command from the fire alarm typically compartmentalising and closing and stopping the spread of the fire.

Generally, they are intended to be used in kitchens, and commercial and industrial buildings as an aid to restrict the spread of fire and effective fire protection measures.

Fire shutters are tested and certified to specific fire-resistance ratings and are classified based on their ability to withstand fire and smoke for a certain period of time. The rating is typically given in minutes, with higher ratings indicating a greater level of protection. These fire-rated shutters can be used in conjunction with other fire protection measures such as sprinkler systems, smoke alarms, and fire extinguishers to provide a comprehensive fire safety solution.

Fire shutters are designed to close automatically in the event of a fire, sealing off the area to prevent the spread of fire and smoke. This can help to contain a fire to a specific area, giving people more time to evacuate and reducing the damage caused by the fire.

In addition to providing fire protection, fire shutters can also provide security against intruders and protection against extreme weather. They can be locked into place, making it difficult for someone to break in through a window or door, and can also provide insulation against heat and cold.
